The Services offers by Sri Lanka Railway fall mainly into the segments of Long Distance and Intercity Express , Colombo Commuter, Parcel and Mail , Freight and provision of Special Charter Trains. Some stations have accommodation facilities. Concessionary and Discounted Season Tickets and Railway Warrants are other benefits extended by Railway.  
     
 
1.Long distance and Intercity Express Service
   
 
Inter-city (ICE) Trains offer express service between main cities such as Colombo-Kandy and Colombo-Vavuniya . Accommodation comprises of reserved 2nd Class and Observation Saloon seats.

Fast-Passenger Trains offer semi-express service between Colombo and other major outstations. Accommodation includes unreserved 2nd and 3rd Class seats, reserved 2nd and 3rd Class seats, reserved 1st Class Observation Saloon , and reserved 1st Class Sleeping Berths. Reserved 1st Class Air-conditioned service is offered only on some routes
 
 
     
   
2. Colombo Commuter
   
 
 
Colombo Commuter Trains offer stopping and semi-express service for commuters traveling to and from Colombo. Accommodat ion is unreserved 3rd class.
 
     
 
3. Parcel and mail Service.
   
 
Parcel Service is offered between all stations. Urgent parcels may be dispatched on express and semi-express trains at a slightly higher tariff.

   Mail is also carried by railway in Fast Passenger Trains running in the Night. This service is offered to the Postal Department.
 
   
4. Freight
 
   Freight Service is offered by Goods Trains running between Colombo and major outstations.  
 
     
 
5. Special Trains
   
 
Special Charter Services are offered using Air-conditioned Train Sets and Special Train Sets for large groups.

Have your plan for the travel - Date of travel, number of persons, Class of travel, Date of Returning to obtain return tickets, alternative dates for travel if you find no reservations available.

Reservations can be done at the  Terminating Stations and at Stopping   Stations on week days from 07.00 AM. Reservations are done at Colombo Fort  from 06.00 AM to  02.00 PM.

One Coach carries 80 Passengers. The minimum traveling distance should be 200Km.
6. Accommodation - Retiring Rooms Station Masters at stations where accommodation is available National Identity Card, number of days of stay and number of persons There are Single, Double and Family Rooms (05 Beds). A rest room for 25 persons is available at Mihintale.

Season Tickets for Private/Public Sector Employees and Students Station Master Application Forms ( two separate applications for Public and Private Sectors ) can be downloaded from Forms Page The season ticket applicants must first obtain Special Folder ( for Government employees ) or Special Identity Card ( for Ordinary Season Ticket applicants ) by submitting an application  
12. Railway Warrants for Senior Citizen Station Master Application Form can be downloaded from Forms Page Application form which are certified by Grama Niladhari and Divisional Secretary to be handed over to Station Master Must be over 60 Years and must not be a retired Government Employee
