Newly imported rolling stock (Class S14) for Sri Lanka Railway

New intercity express train named the "Denuwara Menike" will be deployed from Colombo Fort to Badulla on the upcountry line from First of November, 2019. The train is scheduled to begin its journey at 6.45 am in the morning every day from Colombo Fort and due to travel from Badulla to Fort on the following day. The express train will reach its destination in 8 hours and 42 min.

Sri Lanka Railways received another 3 sets of Class S14 Diesel Electric Multiple Units trains financing from Chinese sovereign loan, China. The first of nine S14 diesel trainsets being supplied by CRRC Qingdao Sifang has entered revenue service on the Colombo Fort to Badulla line. Each S14 has two 74 tonne Bo-Bo power cars with a 1950 hp MTU 12V 4000 R41 diesel engine, plus seven intermediate coaches. The new trains are made with special corrosion-resistant material and techniques catering to the high-temperature and high-humidity in Sri Lanka.

The new intercity train comprises There are two first class air-conditioned cars with a capacity of 88 passengers, two second class cars to carry 96 people, three third class cars able to accommodate 216 passengers and a dining compartment and Seats to all these classes could be reserved in advance. These trains were designed to travel at a speed of 120 km/h and more air-conditioned carriages and are equipped with facilities such as a passenger information system, LCD TV (for entertainment screens) and toilets designed for people with differently able.
